Family History Library of Salt Lake changes document copying policy.

document scanningThe Family Search Blog announced today that they will no longer be photocopying documents. All copying requests from all media types including publications, books, DVDs, CDs, vital records, wills, land records, etc. will be reproduced digitally. The files will then be emailed as PDFs or JPGs.

The following information IS REQUIRED to fulfill the request: film or fiche numer; item number; name(s) in the record; record title; name of relatives or interested parties; event type; event place; full date; place; volume and/or page number; registration or certificate number; and any other pertinent information.

All reproduced files will be emailed to the person requesting the information, or they will post via US mail if the customer has no email address. They are also providing the option to have the digital file emailed to the customer’s nearest Family History Center for printing and/or file copying to media.

The amazing thing about all of this is that this service is being provided free of charge. This is one organization that truly meets my ideal of providing free and open sharing of genealogical information.

All requests are to be emailed to photoduplication@familysearch.org.
