This is what I like to see – the big players in the field working together to preserve valuable documents, photos, etc. from the War of 1812 for free access and future use by genealogists and researchers.
On the Preserve the Pensions digitization website, Ancestry.com has pledged to match all contributions to this worthwhile project dollar for dollar. FamilySearch has pledged a contribution of $250,000 to the cause and the National Archives is making the records available for digitization.
Of 7.2 million images that require digitization, over 450,000 (approximately 6%) have been digitized to date, many of which are already available for free at Fold3.com.
