Google Drive Is Here!

Google DocsRecently I started playing around with Google Docs in anticipation of the launch of Google Drive.

I love the idea of working online with online storage of the required documents and media for easy access from anywhere and by anyone who is authorized.

For a blogger like me in particular, I can plan ahead and make sure any files I might need while traveling or not at home for whatever reason, are transferred to Google Drive from my own external hard drive. The laptop is all I want to have to take with me.

As an avid genealogist, some of the features I will make use of the most are:

  • Safe online storage and easy access of files and media, making it possible to easily take work on the road and carry the least amount of equipment possible to travel light
  • The ability to search text in scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), an ideal tool for those of us in genealogy who could use the OCR scan to find key information much more quickly than having to read every word.
  • Image recognition search from photos dragged and dropped into Google Drive for keyword search.

Other attractive features include:

  • Options to upgrade storage space for varying price ranges.
  • Easily attach images from Google Drive to Google+ posts.
  • Use third party apps from the Chrome Web Store to send faxes, edit videos and create website mockups.
  • Future ability to attach files to Gmail.

Now that Google Drive is operational, I am definitely explore the possibilities.
